this is excellent news and am very happy to read that leuser has actually increased it's rhino population. and again we need people to realize that conservation of the little amount of forest we have left is the only way to stop theses marvelous species going extinct.

i watched half of this panorama on palm oil and was feeling physically sick by the end of it, i was disgraced at how the large companies who sanction and justify this despicable practice. i agree with this blog how can any palm oil plantation be classified as sustainable unless it is organically fertilized i am appalled to read that it takes 10 tonnes of crude oil to produce 2 tonnes of palm oil, i am almost lost for words!!!!! it is just outrageous that we justify all of this by buying the products containing palm oil, i agree with rex wholeheartedly that conservation of the forest's is the answer but i believe that we should stop buying products with palm oil in it and send a strong message to the company's justifying this practice.

Yes IF the forest is protected. There are some huge problems with local residents who are understandably terrified at the prospect of maneaters being released near them. I will get some more information on this and publish it shortly.

Great reporting and strategic thinking.

Could the Sumatran tigers be integrated into other protected and sizeable reserves in Indonesia (elsewhere) where the local tigers are threatened by extinction. Is that part of the wider/longer term FFtF strategy?

this is a very real dilemma. Rome has just had the first snow in 30 years if this fact is not a big slap in the face to all of tho's skeptics i don't no what is. i believe very much in attacking the problem from both ends, this surely is the only sensible coherent plan. people only want the short easy solution, which there is none for our problem. when i say our problem i mean every person who resides in this world which is not ours it is only on loan, a loan we are not paying back. and this will be our demise.

what a brilliant blog, even tho i have been passionate about tigers all my life i was not aware there where 9 species. it is a real real shame that there are only 5000 left, it makes me very sad that this great creature which respects it's environment's with such grace does not get our respect in return!!!

Global Warming and Climate Change is the biggest environmental issue that we face these days. the long term effects of these environmental changes to a nations economy is quite damaging. there would be a shortage in food supply as well as on water supply too.
